Plot Through Dialogue

Overview

In this first and only lesson of the unit, students will read selected excerpts from The Gift of the Magi and analyze how Jim and Della’s interactions shape plot events. They will record evidence from quotes to explain how those interactions reveal character motivations and move the story forward.

Learning intentions

Students will be able to:

• Explain how interactions between characters help develop the plot in The Gift of the Magi.
• Identify key character motivations shown through what characters say and do.
• Analyze how specific quotes suggest the impact of interactions on later events.
• Record findings in a simple interaction-impact chart with textual evidence.

Success criteria

• I can point to a character interaction in the text and name the plot outcome it leads to.
• I can describe a character’s motivation and use a quote to support it.
• I can explain how one interaction causes, changes, or motivates the next event.
• I can complete an interaction-impact chart clearly and accurately.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Hook (Set purpose). Teacher shows the class prompt on the interaction and plot hook slides: “When two people talk, argue, or help each other, how might that change what happens next?” Students respond in writing with one possible plot change (or prediction) based on their own experience.

2. 5–12 min · Mini-lesson: What to look for. Teacher introduces two terms on the interaction and plot hook slides: interaction (what one character does/says that affects another) and plot development (how events in the story move because of that interaction). Students underline sentence frames the teacher models: “Jim and Della’s interaction shows ___ because ___.”

3. 12–25 min · Read closely: Excerpts 1–2. Teacher distributes the interaction impact chart worksheet and reads aloud the first selected excerpt, stopping to model a quick “think” about what changes after each character’s response. Students follow along, then answer on the worksheet: identify one interaction and one character motivation from the excerpt.

4. 25–35 min · Guided discussion with quotes. Teacher shows Quote A and Quote B from the excerpt sequence on the interaction and plot hook slides and asks: “What does this quote suggest about what the character wants or needs?” Students participate in a teacher-led whole-class discussion and record evidence in the chart using a short quote fragment.

5. 35–45 min · Chart work: Interaction → Motivation → Plot. Teacher models how to complete one row on the interaction impact chart worksheet:

• Interaction (what happens between them)
• Motivation (why that matters to the character)
• Plot impact (what it leads to next in the story) Students work independently to complete two more rows from the second excerpt segment.

6. 45–55 min · Share & clarify (Accountable evidence). Teacher selects 2–3 student responses and asks follow-up questions using the interaction and plot hook slides prompts: “Which part of the interaction caused the change?” and “Where is your evidence?” Students revise one chart entry if needed, adding a clearer explanation in complete sentences.

7. 55–60 min · Closure (Check for understanding). Teacher gives a quick written exit response using the first part of the worksheet (no additional printable): students answer one prompt: “One interaction in The Gift of the Magi affects the plot because…” and include a quote fragment. Teacher collects to confirm understanding for the unit.

• During guided discussion: teacher listens for correct identification of interaction and motivation.

• End-of-lesson closure response: students explain cause-and-effect using textual evidence.

Differentiation

• Provide sentence starters for students who need structure: “The interaction between ___ and ___ shows ___ because ___.” and “This affects the plot when ___.”
• Allow partial credit for identifying interaction first, then motivation, then plot impact; teacher prompts students to complete the missing link.
• For students who finish early: ask them to choose one interaction and write a second sentence explaining how it changes the next event.
• For EAL or students needing language support: encourage use of fewer words with more evidence (short quote + simple explanation).
