Overview
This 60-minute interactive lesson introduces 6th graders to plotting polygons on a coordinate plane using geoboards. Students will deepen their understanding of polygons by creating, analyzing, and classifying them based on vertices, angles, and side lengths following the Common Core State Standards for Math (CCSSM).

Lesson Procedures
1. Introduction & Engage (10 minutes)
- Begin by reviewing the coordinate plane basics: x-axis, y-axis, and how to plot points.
- Display a large coordinate plane with a simple polygon (triangle or quadrilateral) using an interactive whiteboard.
- Ask: “What information do we need to draw this polygon on our geoboards?” Discuss vertices as coordinate points.

2. Guided Exploration with Geoboards (15 minutes)
- Distribute geoboards and rubber bands to students, along with printed grids matching the geoboard.
- Teacher models plotting polygon vertices on the geoboard using given coordinate points (e.g., (2,3), (5,3), (5,6), (2,6) to form a rectangle).
- Students replicate the polygon on their geoboards.
- Once constructed, students identify the polygon’s properties: number of sides, parallel sides, right angles, etc.
Formative Assessment: Walk room to observe and ask targeted questions like, “How do you know these sides are equal?”
3. Independent Practice: Polygon Creation & Classification (20 minutes)
- Hand out a worksheet with coordinate pairs for various polygons on the coordinate plane (triangles, rectangles, irregular polygons).
- Students use geoboards to plot the points and connect vertices with rubber bands.
- For each polygon, students:
- Name the polygon type
- Calculate side lengths for sides aligned vertically or horizontally (using coordinate difference)

Extension: Challenge students to create their own polygon on graph paper, write down its coordinates, and trade with a partner to build on the geoboard.

- Facilitate a discussion on how the coordinate system helps in understanding geometric shapes and measurements.
- Highlight real-life applications, such as computer graphics or architectural design, that use coordinate geometry.
5. Exit Ticket / Assessment (5 minutes)
- Distribute a short quiz with 3 coordinate pairs; students must:
- Plot points correctly
- Name the polygon formed
- Calculate one side length (if side is horizontal or vertical)
