Preparation Copy the Student Handout for each student.
Procedure and Facilitation Points Pass out the Student Handout, and have students write down examples of items that will light up a room. Students may need help coming up with an example at first. You may want to begin the discussion with a time you lost power and how you lit up the room at night using your cell phone until the battery died. When students are finished, have them sit in a circle and ask the question, “Who has ever lost power at their house?” After students raise their hands, ask if they think it would be better to lose power during the day or at night and why. Allow students to tell of times they lost power and what they did to be able to see. Allow students to talk for just 2–3 minutes; otherwise, student stories may take a very long time. Before students share their stories, remind them that classroom expectations are as follows: Practice active listening. Wait for your turn to speak. Build on the discussion. Everyone must contribute to the discussion. After students have been able to tell their stories, continue the class discussion by talking about how the sun is usually shining in the daytime, so it would be easier to see because the sunlight could come through the windows; at night, this could not happen. Make sure that before the end of the discussion, students come to the conclusion (either with your guidance or self-guidance) that there are many ways to light up a room.
