Overview

This lesson is the first of a multi-week series called "Adventures in Reading," designed to captivate young readers through wholesome, engaging books aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Students will read 2 chapters per week, spreading the reading over several weeks to allow deeper comprehension and discussion. For example, recommended books for the first weeks include:

Weeks 1-2: The Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne (2 chapters per week)
Weeks 3-4: Matilda by Roald Dahl (2 chapters per week)

All these books provide rich storytelling for character development, theme exploration, and vocabulary growth that complement CCSS objectives for grades 3-5.

Lesson Procedure

1. Warm-up Activity (10 minutes)

Objective: Activate prior knowledge and build anticipation.
Begin with a short, lively discussion: “What makes a great adventure in a story?”
Write students’ answers on the board, encouraging descriptive words and ideas about settings, characters, and challenges.
Introduce the book The Magic Treehouse series and briefly summarize the story premise to connect with this theme of adventures and friendships.

2. Read Aloud and Guided Reading (20 minutes)

Read aloud the first two chapters of The Magic Treehouse series engagingly, using expressive voices to capture student interest.
During reading, pause to ask probing questions such as:
What do you think the main character is like so far?
How do the actions of the characters help us understand their feelings?
Write key vocabulary words from the text on the board (e.g., "radiant," "humble," "conceited") and briefly discuss meanings using sentence context.

3. Group Discussion & Collaborative Activity (15 minutes)

Divide the class into four groups of five students.
Provide each group with a graphic organizer focusing on characters and theme.
Each group uses sticky notes on chart paper to list:
Character traits and examples from the story
Emerging themes (friendship, courage, kindness)
Groups share their findings with the class, supported by text evidence.

4. Vocabulary Game (10 minutes)

Engage students in a vocabulary quiz game: using the flashcards, students take turns drawing a card and giving a sentence with the word using clues from the story.
Peers agree or help refine sentences, ensuring understanding and correct usage.

5. Wrap-up and Reflect (5 minutes)

Invite students to write a quick response on a sticky note: "What did you learn about friendship or courage from the story today?"
Students post responses on a dedicated "Learning Wall."
Preview the next week’s reading to build excitement.
