Overview

Students investigate what seeds need to begin growing by setting up a simple, fair comparison with water and no water. Lesson structure (40 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and question. Teacher opens with the seed investigation introduction slides, showing a dry seed and a sprouted seed, then asks, “What might help a seed wake up and grow?” Students turn and talk, share ideas, and observe the seed without touching it.

  2. 5–10 min · Teach the procedure. Teacher uses the procedure and safety slides to model the investigation: label two cups “water” and “no water,” place one cotton ball in each, add one seed to each cotton ball, add one teaspoon of water only to the water cup, and place both cups together. Students help arrange picture cards or repeat each step in order using the gestures “label, place, add, compare.”

  3. 10–14 min · Plan and predict. Teacher forms four groups of three and distributes the Plant Parts Recording Template for each student or group. Teacher explains that both cups must receive the same type and number of seeds, cotton, light, and temperature; only water will change. Students draw or write a prediction about which seed will show more signs of growth and explain their thinking.

  4. 14–27 min · Set up the investigation. Teacher provides two clear cups, cotton balls, and seeds to each group, checks that students are following the steps rather than guessing, and pauses for safety reminders about keeping materials away from mouths and eyes. Students work as a team: one reads the steps, one handles materials, and one checks the setup. Each group labels its cups, places the seeds, adds water to only one cup, and records the starting observations on the Plant Parts Recording Template.

  5. 27–34 min · Compare and discuss results. Teacher brings groups together and uses the comparison and discussion slides to display a simple results table. Because sprouting may not occur during one class period, teacher provides prepared examples or photographs of a watered seed and a dry seed for students to compare. Students record observations such as “soft,” “dry,” “swollen,” “root,” or “no change,” then discuss: “What evidence shows that water affected the seed?”

  6. 34–40 min · Explain and exit check. Teacher uses the explanation and closing slides to model an evidence-based sentence: “The watered seed began to change because it had water.” Students complete the seed investigation reflection worksheet, drawing or writing the procedure in order and answering, “What did we change?” and “What did we keep the same?” Invite two students to share their explanations.
