Teaching Instructions

I would like to write out objectives for my report card to have a simple understanding of what the students are doing Here is what the students are doing. They are creating a unique sketchbook cover about them. They will design and draw different things that show about them. They can use designing words or images their favorite colors whatever it may be so we can get to know one another and understand them as an artist they show their creativeness in this lesson and what level artistry they’re at.

Self-Expression Through Art

Grade Level: 1st–5th Grade

Lesson Duration: 50 minutes
School: Williamsport Elementary, Hagerstown, MD
Curriculum Alignment: National Core Art Standards (NCAS)

Lesson Overview

Students will design and create a unique sketchbook cover that reflects their personal interests, experiences, and individuality. This project encourages self-expression, creative decision-making, and skill assessment, allowing the teacher to understand students’ artistic level and personal voices as young artists.

Objectives

  1. National Core Arts Standards Focus:

    • Creating (Anchor Standard #1): "Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work."
    • Creating (Anchor Standard #2): "Organize and develop artistic ideas and work."
    • Responding (Anchor Standard #7): "Perceive and analyze artistic work."
  2. Lesson Objectives:

    • Students will learn elements of line, color, and composition by brainstorming and creating visual designs that represent their individuality in order to communicate their personal identity through art.
    • Students will learn how to apply artistic techniques, such as sketching and outlining, by using words, symbols, and patterns in order to develop technical and creative skills.
    • Students will learn to reflect on their choices by discussing their designs with peers in order to foster confidence and appreciation for unique artistic voices.

Materials Needed

  • Blank sketchbook covers (or heavy cardstock paper)
  • Pencils, erasers
  • Colored pencils, crayons, and markers
  • Stencils for shapes/letters (optional)
  • Rulers
  • Scrap paper for brainstorming/drafts
  • Examples of pre-decorated sketchbook covers for inspiration
  • Whiteboard/large chart for brainstorming ideas as a class

Lesson Plan

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Focus Question (written on board): "What makes YOU unique?"
  • Start with brief class discussion:
    • “What kinds of things make up who we are? (e.g., hobbies, favorite colors, family, animals we love, music we enjoy, etc.)”
  • Encourage examples and quick responses to get creativity flowing.
  • Teacher writes example ideas on the board or chart paper for inspiration.

2. Instruction and Demonstration (10 minutes)

  1. Break Down the Task:

    • Show a pre-decorated example of a sketchbook cover while explaining:
      • “This cover is a special space for YOU. You will design something that shows who you are as an artist and person.”
      • Clearly define what they can include:
        • Symbols (e.g., hearts for love, a basketball for sports)
        • Words (e.g., their name, adjectives describing them, favorite quotes)
        • Colors (favorite shades, patterns)
  2. Quick Mini-Lesson:

    • Demonstrate basic techniques:
      • Roughly sketching ideas lightly in pencil before finalizing.
      • Using a ruler for borders or symmetry.
      • Layering colors for impact.
    • Reinforce basic design principles: Balance, contrast, and use of space.

3. Creative Work Time (30 minutes)

Step 1: Brainstorming (5 minutes)

  • Distribute scrap paper for students to jot down ideas or sketch rough drafts.
  • Encourage them to reference the class brainstorm list on the board if they get stuck.

Step 2: Sketchbook Cover Design (25 minutes)

  • Provide each student their sketchbook cover or cardstock.
  • Allow freedom to choose their materials (markers, colored pencils, etc.) to bring their concept to life.
  • Remind them of key guidelines:
    • Think about how their choices represent who they are.
    • Sketch in pencil first before adding color or other details.
    • Use the whole space creatively.

4. Reflection and Clean-Up (5 minutes)

  1. Quick Reflection:

    • Ask a few volunteers to share their designs. Prompt them to explain one element (a color, word, or image) and why they included it.
    • Emphasize that every cover is different because everyone is unique.
  2. Clean-Up:

    • Students help return shared materials to their places.
    • Collect finished covers or ask students to keep them in a safe space until next class.

Teacher’s Notes

  1. Modifications for Grade Levels:

    • Younger students (1st–2nd grade): Focus more on symbols and colors. Provide templates for them to trace or brainstorm prompts like, “What’s your favorite ice cream?”
    • Older students (4th–5th grade): Encourage including pattern work, more complex designs, or use of meaningful words/phrases.
  2. Classroom Management:

    • Pair students who may need support with a partner for brainstorming.
    • Offer ideas/check-ins to students who feel "stuck."
  3. Differentiation:

    • For students with fine motor delays, provide larger tools or allow simpler designs.
    • For advanced learners, offer techniques like shading, outlining letters, or creating gradients.

Assessment

Informal Observation:

  • Assess engagement during brainstorming and creation time.
  • Note if students demonstrate planning and effort in their designs, or if they need further guidance using elements of art.

Formative Evaluation:

  • Review finished covers for evidence of effort, creativity, and choice-making.
  • Reflect on what their art communicates about them as individuals.

Reflection for Next Class

  • Review common patterns or challenges identified in this week’s work.
  • Plan additional instruction (if needed) in elements like composition or color balance.
