Lesson 4 of 5: Main Ideas Uncovered

Grade Levels

6-9

Duration

30 minutes
Class size: 20 students

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify the main idea of a short passage.
  • Recognize and select key details that support the main idea.
  • Write concise summaries using their own words that include main ideas and key details.

Aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for ELA:

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.2: Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.8.2: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.

Materials Needed

  • Printed short passages (150-200 words) suitable for grades 6-9
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Notebooks or writing paper
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Chart paper with summarizing steps outlined
  • Sticky notes

Lesson Procedure

1. Introduction & Objective Review (5 minutes)

  • Begin by writing the lesson objective on the board: "Today we will learn how to summarize a text by finding the main idea and key details."
  • Briefly review what the main idea is (the big point the text is making) and what key details are (important facts or examples that support the main idea).
  • Use an example passage on chart paper to model how to identify the main idea and key details aloud. Think aloud as you demonstrate, e.g., "What is this mostly about? What facts support this thought?"

2. Guided Practice: Main Idea & Key Details Identification (7 minutes)

  • Distribute a short printed passage to each student.
  • Ask students to silently read it twice (one for understanding, one for identifying) – set a 3-minute timer.
  • After reading, direct students to underline or highlight:
    • the sentence or phrase that states the main idea
    • 2-3 key details that support it
  • After this, facilitate a quick whole-class discussion, asking volunteers to share their main idea sentences and key details. Write them on the whiteboard.
  • As students share, reinforce if they correctly identified the main idea and relevant details.

3. Paired Activity: Writing Summaries (10 minutes)

  • Pair students (10 pairs) and instruct that they will write a summary together based on the passage.
  • Provide a summarizing framework on chart paper or handout:
    1. State the main idea clearly in your own words.
    2. Include 2-3 key details that support the main idea.
    3. Use complete sentences and avoid copying text verbatim.
  • Pairs discuss and write a 3-4 sentence summary on paper within 8 minutes.
  • Circulate the room to provide formative feedback and help scaffold if needed (e.g. prompt rephrasing).

4. Share & Reflect (6 minutes)

  • Invite 3-4 pairs to read their summaries aloud.
  • Ask the class using sticky notes to write one strength and one question or suggestion for improvement about each summary they hear.
  • Collect feedback and briefly highlight common strengths such as clarity or appropriate key details, and address typical misconceptions or errors.

5. Closure & Assignment Hint (2 minutes)

  • Recap the key skill learned: "Summarizing means finding the main idea and the important details, then putting them together clearly in your own words."
  • Inform students that next lesson, they will practice this skill with longer and more complex texts.
  • Encourage them to try summarizing short articles or stories at home.

Assessment

  • Formal: Teacher reviews the paired summaries for accuracy in identifying the main idea and inclusion of key details.
  • Informal: Class discussion and sticky note feedback on summary presentations.
  • Exit Check: Quick oral questioning to verify understanding of main idea and key details.

Differentiation & Accommodations

  • For Struggling Students:
Provide scaffolded summaries with sentence starters, a graphic organizer for main idea/key details before writing.
  • For Advanced Students:
Challenge with a second, more complex passage or to compare summaries and discuss differences in main idea interpretation.
  • English Language Learners (ELL):
Allow use of bilingual dictionaries, and pair with peer mentors.
  • Students with IEPs:
Offer additional reading time and verbal summaries if writing is challenging.

Extensions / After Class Ideas

  • Students can create visual summaries using a mind map or storyboard summarizing a favorite book or article.
  • Use digital tools like apps for summarizing text where available to engage tech-savvy students.

Notes to Teachers

This lesson fosters higher-level critical thinking by requiring students to distill essential information without opinions, a vital skill for authentic comprehension. Pairing students encourages peer-to-peer learning and language processing important at these grades. The sticky note activity provides immediate visual formative feedback and encourages active listening—skills often overlooked in reading lessons.

End the lesson with praise highlighting how summarizing builds stronger readers and writers, setting an empowering tone for the final lesson in the "Main Ideas Uncovered" unit.
