- “Traffic Sign Safety” worksheet (designed for NJ Preschool standards, provided below)
Lesson Outline
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin with a friendly greeting and a short chat: "Have you ever seen a red stop sign? What do you think it means?"
- Show large colorful pictures of each traffic sign one by one and ask the children to name or describe them.
- Explain what each sign means in very simple terms.
- Read a short, interactive story about a child learning to cross the street safely.
- Engage students by asking, "What do you do before you cross the street?"
Standards: CCSS.SL.K.4, NJ 6.3.P.D.1
2. Group Discussion & Chart Creation (7 minutes)
- On chart paper, draw three columns titled: Stop, Look, and Walk.
- List simple safety rules with input from students (teacher records their ideas).
- Example rules: “Stop at the curb,” “Look both ways,” “Walk on the sidewalk.”
- Use visuals and reinforce vocabulary to build language skills.
Standards: CCSS.SL.K.1, CCSS.L.K.6, NJ 6.1.P.A.2
3. Role-Play Activity: Traffic Safety Practice (15 minutes)
- Arrange the classroom to simulate a mini-roadroom with tape for roads and crosswalks.
- Assign roles: drivers, pedestrians, and traffic safety officers (holding signs). Rotate roles so everyone participates.
- Teacher models the scenario: When the stop sign is raised, toy cars must stop; pedestrians wait and then cross safely.
- Emphasize taking turns and waiting politely.
- Encourage students to use full sentences like “Stop,” “Go,” or “Wait.”
Standards: CCSS.SL.K.1, CCSS.L.K.6, NJ 6.1.P.A.1, 6.1.P.A.2
4. Worksheet Activity: Traffic Signs Practice (8 minutes)
- Distribute the “Traffic Sign Safety” worksheet.
- Students will match traffic signs to their meanings by coloring the correct sign or drawing lines.
- Teacher circulates and asks guiding questions to reinforce concepts.
Standards: NJ 6.3.P.D.1, CCSS.L.K.6
5. Wrap-up and Review (5 minutes)
- Gather students in a circle.
- Ask volunteers to explain one traffic sign and what it means.
- Praise positive social behaviors during role-play.
- Conclude with a catchy chant: “Stop, Look, and Listen before we walk!”
Standards: CCSS.SL.K.1, CCSS.SL.K.4
Assessment
- Observation during role-play: Do students follow traffic sign rules and social turn-taking?
- Worksheet completion: Correctly match traffic signs with meanings.
- Participation in discussions and responses during review.
