Description In this activity, students choose between responses about why turtles hide inside their shells.
Printed Material 1 Animal Survival (per student or class)
Preparation You may choose to either print a page for each student or project the page on the board. Procedure and Facilitation Points Tell students they will be listening to student ideas about turtles and deciding which opinion they agree with most. Assign each student opinion to a different corner of the room. Once they have decided which opinion they agree with most, tell students they should move to the designated corner. Give students time to share their thoughts with their groups. After students have shared with their groups, allow them to share their thoughts as a whole group. Options Have students play charades within their groups. They can act out an animal surviving in its habitat. The group needs to name the animal and how it uses its body parts to find food and protect itself. Preconceptions These preconceptions can be addressed as students move through the scope and do not need to be clarified at this point. Be sure to keep the preconceptions uncovered during this APK in mind as you move through the scope.
Students may have a hard time distinguishing between physical and behavioral adaptations. For behavioral adaptations, make sure that students know what this means, scientifically, for animals (e.g., opossums playing dead to avoid predators, being nocturnal, hibernating, migrating, etc.). Physical adaptations are changes in body parts (legs, wings, fins, etc.).
