Understanding Clauses

Curriculum Area

English Language Arts, Grade 5
Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.1.A

Objective

Students will be able to identify, classify, and write independent and dependent clauses.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Chart paper
  • Printed worksheets with sentences
  • Index cards
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Timer
  • Post-it notes

Lesson Outline

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Quick Warm-Up (3 minutes): Have a sentence on the board: "The dog barked when the mailman arrived." Ask students to identify the subject and the verb.

  • Objective Overview (2 minutes): Explain that today, students will learn about independent and dependent clauses, which are parts of sentences that have a subject and a verb.

2. Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  • Definition & Explanation (5 minutes):

    • Independent Clause: A group of words that can stand alone as a sentence. It has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.
    • Dependent Clause: A group of words that has a subject and a verb but cannot stand alone as a sentence. It does not express a complete thought and usually starts with a subordinating conjunction (e.g., because, when, if).

    Write examples on the board:

    • Independent: "She likes to read."
    • Dependent: "Because she likes to read"
  • Interactive Explanation (5 minutes):

    • Draw a T-chart on the board with "Independent Clauses" on one side and "Dependent Clauses" on the other.
    • Read several sentences aloud and ask students to classify them by coming up and writing the clauses on the appropriate side of the chart.

3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)

  • Distribute printed worksheets with mixed sentences that include both independent and dependent clauses.
  • Work through the first few sentences as a class, identifying and classifying the clauses together.

4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)

  • Pair up students and give each pair a set of index cards with pre-written clauses. Some cards will have independent clauses, and others will have dependent clauses.
  • Students will classify each card as either an independent or dependent clause and then combine cards to create complex sentences.
  • Circulate the room to monitor student progress and provide guidance.

5. Conclusion and Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Quick Review (2 minutes):

    • Ask students to share one example of an independent clause and one example of a dependent clause from their pair work.
  • Exit Ticket (3 minutes):

    • Hand out post-it notes. Ask each student to write one independent clause and one dependent clause on their note and stick it to the designated "Independent" or "Dependent" area on the chart paper.
    • Collect and quickly review for understanding.

Extensions and Homework

  • Homework Assignment:

    • Ask students to write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) at home, making sure to include at least two independent clauses and two dependent clauses. They should underline the independent clauses once and the dependent clauses twice.
  • Extension Activity:

    • For early finishers or advanced students, provide more complex sentences and ask them to break down and identify multiple independent and dependent clauses within a single sentence.

Reflection

After the lesson, the teacher should reflect on:

  • Whether the students were able to differentiate between independent and dependent clauses successfully
  • Which students might need more support or challenging work
  • The effectiveness of the pair activity
  • Adjustments needed for future lessons on the same topic.

By creating a highly interactive and engaging lesson plan that balances direct instruction with hands-on activities, you'll ensure that all students grasp this fundamental building block of English grammar.
