Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-Up & Engagement (5 minutes)
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and set context.
- Begin with a mini discussion: "Can anyone tell me what an unknown number might look like in math?"
- Show a simple expression like 3 + __ and ask students what could fill the blank.
- Introduce the term variable as a letter or symbol that stands for an unknown or changing number.
- Display I Can statements and success criteria on the board for student reference.
2. Direct Instruction (7 minutes)
Objective: Teach the definition and role of variables.
- Define a variable as a letter that represents a number we don’t know yet or that can change.
- Use simple expressions like: 5 + x, y - 4, 2m.
- Show how the variable (x, y, m) can take different values.
- Provide real-life examples:
- "If ‘x’ is the number of cookies you have, how does that help us count?"
- "Time to finish homework — it changes daily, so we call it a variable."
- Use the dyslexia-friendly handout to visually reinforce content with clear definitions and large print.
3. Guided Practice (8 minutes)
Objective: Practice identifying variables.
Activity: Expression Identification Game
- Give each student a printed card with an expression.
- On mini whiteboards, students will write down:
