Learning Objectives
Aligned with the IB PYP Language Scope and Sequence for Grade 3:

- Social Skills: Collaborate respectfully when sharing and discussing ideas.
- Transdisciplinary Skills: Use communication and self-management skills to complete presentation tasks.
Materials Needed

- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Tablets or laptops with basic presentation software (optional for digital presentations)
- Graphic organizer worksheet (Central Idea and Supporting Details)
- Timer or clock for time management
Lesson Breakdown
1. Warm-Up & Review (5 minutes)
Purpose: Build on previous learning and activate prior knowledge.
- Begin by asking students to share one fun fact they remember from the previous lesson about dunes or vacation spots.
- Quickly review what a central idea is and why identifying it helps us understand a text better. Display a simple definition on the board:
Central Idea = What the text is mostly about.
- Show a quick example with a familiar short text (e.g., about a school trip) to reinforce identifying main ideas and details.
IB Focus: Activating prior knowledge to promote inquiry and connect learning.
2. Reading the Text (8 minutes)
Purpose: Engage students with the text and model active reading strategies.
- Distribute the “Vacationing at Michigan Dunes” informational text.
- Conduct a shared reading, with the teacher reading aloud and students following along. Pause periodically to ask:
- “What do you think the main idea is so far?”
- “What detail helps you understand this part?”
- Encourage students to underline or highlight key sentences or facts that seem important.
IB Focus: Developing communication skills and focusing on connection through discussion and text.
3. Graphic Organizer Activity (7 minutes)
Purpose: Organize thoughts and identify central idea and supporting details visually.
- Give each student a graphic organizer with two sections: Central Idea and Supporting Details.
- Model filling out the graphic organizer together as a class based on text evidence. Write the central idea on the board, then list 3 supporting details discovered during reading.
- Students work independently or in pairs to complete their own organizers.
IB Focus: Encouraging thinking skills, organization, and reflection on text components.
4. Visual Summary Creation (7 minutes)
Purpose: Synthesize and express understanding through creative presentation.
- Explain that students will create a visual summary of what they learned:
- Option A: Draw a poster highlighting the central idea and supporting details using images and words.
- Option B: For tech-savvy groups, create a simple digital slide or presentation summarizing the text.
- Circulate and assist students as they work. Remind them to clearly show the central idea and include details in their visuals.
IB Focus: Communication and self-management skills while applying creativity.
5. Sharing and Reflection (3 minutes)
Purpose: Build community, reinforce learning, and practice communication skills.
- Invite 3-4 students to briefly share their visual summaries with the class.
- Ask reflective questions:
- “How did the details help you understand the main idea better?”
- “Why do you think summarizing is important when we read?”
- Praise all efforts and emphasize the value of different ways to communicate ideas.
IB Focus: Reflective thinking, communication, and social collaboration.
Assessment
Formative Strategies
- Observation during shared reading and graphic organizer activities to check understanding of central idea and details.
- Review graphic organizers for accuracy and completeness.
- Evaluate visual summaries based on clarity of central idea and relevant supporting details.
- Listen to student explanations during sharing for comprehension and communicative clarity.
IB PYP Assessment Criteria Alignment
- Thinking: Demonstrates understanding of the central idea and related details.
- Communication: Expresses ideas clearly through visual and oral formats.
- Social: Participates respectfully and shares ideas confidently in group discussions.
Differentiation & Extensions
- Support: Provide sentence starters for graphic organizers or group students for peer support.
- Challenge: Encourage advanced students to include a short written explanation on their poster or slide expanding on why the details are important.
- Extension: Students who finish early can research another Michigan vacation spot and identify the central idea of a new text.
Teacher’s Reflection Prompt (Post-Lesson)
- Did students effectively identify the central idea and supporting details?
- How engaged were students with creating visual summaries?
- Which strategies helped support struggling readers?
- How can I build on this lesson to further develop students’ summarization and presentation skills?
This engaging, inquiry-driven lesson aligns comprehensively with the IB PYP language objectives and learner profile, empowering 3rd graders to explore texts critically while expressing understanding creatively.
