Addition and Subtraction Within 1,000
Grade 3 Mathematics Building Number Fluency Using Place Value Strategies

What We Already Know
We can add and subtract smaller numbers Numbers have different place values Hundreds, tens, and ones help us organize numbers We can use tools like blocks to help us count

Place Value: The Key to Success
Every 3-digit number has three parts: Hundreds place (left) Tens place (middle) Ones place (right) Example: 437 = 4 hundreds + 3 tens + 7 ones

Let's Add Together: 437 + 256
Step 1: Line up the place values Step 2: Add ones: 7 + 6 = 13 (regroup!) Step 3: Add tens: 3 + 5 + 1 = 9 Step 4: Add hundreds: 4 + 2 = 6 Answer: 693

Your Turn to Think!
Look at this problem: 652 - 178 What should we do first? Which place value will we start with? Do you think we'll need to regroup?

Solving 652 - 178 Together
Step 1: Line up place values Step 2: Start with ones: 2 - 8 (need to regroup!) Step 3: Borrow from tens: 12 - 8 = 4 Step 4: Tens: 4 - 7 (need to regroup again!) Step 5: Borrow from hundreds: 14 - 7 = 7 Step 6: Hundreds: 5 - 1 = 4 Answer: 474

Practice Time!
Get your mini whiteboard ready! Solve: 345 + 289 Remember to: • Line up place values • Start with ones • Regroup when needed • Show your work clearly

Remember This!
"Place value is our superpower for solving big number problems!" When we understand hundreds, tens, and ones, we can add and subtract any numbers within 1,000 with confidence.
