Classifying Ratios: Part-to-Part vs Part-to-Whole
Grade 6 Mathematics Understanding Different Types of Ratios

What is a Ratio?
A ratio compares two quantities It shows how much of one thing compared to another We can write ratios using colons (:) or the word 'to' Example: 3 to 2 or 3:2

Think About This...
Look around the classroom What are some things you could compare? How many boys compared to girls? How many pencils compared to erasers on your desk?

Part-to-Part Ratios
Compares one part to another part Both parts are separate groups Example: 4 dogs to 3 cats We're comparing dogs with cats (two different groups)

Part-to-Whole Ratios
Compares one part to the entire whole The whole includes all the parts Example: 4 dogs to 7 total pets We're comparing dogs to ALL the pets (dogs + cats)

Comparing the Two Types
{"left":"Part-to-Part: Dogs to Cats (4:3)\nPart-to-Part: Compares separate groups\nPart-to-Part: Groups don't overlap","right":"Part-to-Whole: Dogs to All Pets (4:7)\nPart-to-Whole: Compares part to total\nPart-to-Whole: Part is included in the whole"}

Practice Time: Classify These Ratios!
