Combining Sentences with "And"
Grade 3 English Language Arts Day 1: Combining Action Words

Learning Objectives - I Can Statements
I can combine two sentences that each have a verb by using "and." I can understand how to join two actions performed by the same subject using "and." I can identify verbs (action words) in sentences.

Success Criteria - How We'll Know We're Learning
I can identify two separate verbs in separate sentences. I can correctly combine those sentences using "and" to form one compound sentence. I can orally read combined sentences smoothly.

What Are Verbs?
"Verbs are action words that tell us what someone or something DOES!"

Teacher Modeling - I Do
Let's look at these two sentences: "The dog runs." + "The dog barks." We can combine them: "The dog runs and barks." Notice: Same subject (The dog), two actions (runs, barks)

Guided Practice - We Do Together
Work with your partner to combine these sentences: "The cat sleeps." + "The cat purrs." "I jump." + "I clap." Remember: Find the verbs and connect them with "and"!

Differentiation Strategies
Struggling learners: Use sentence frames "The ___ ___ and ___." Advanced learners: Add describing words like "The dog runs quickly and barks loudly." Visual learners: Use picture cards showing actions All students: Practice with mini whiteboards for immediate feedback

Independent Practice - You Do
Now it's your turn! Combine these sentence pairs using "and": 1. "The bird flies." + "The bird sings." 2. "We read." + "We write." 3. "The baby crawls." + "The baby giggles."
