What is Area?
Area is the amount of space inside a flat shape We measure area by counting squares that cover it Think of it like covering your bedroom floor with square rugs No gaps or overlaps allowed!
Meet Our Square Tiles
Each tile is 1 inch by 1 inch This makes it 1 square inch We'll use these to build rectangles Remember: tiles must touch with no spaces!
Building Our First Rectangle
Start with 12 square tiles Arrange them in rows and columns Make sure tiles touch each other Count the total tiles to find the area
Think and Discuss
How many different rectangles can you make with 24 tiles? Will they all have the same area? What do you notice about the rows and columns?
