Exploring Positive and Negative Numbers
Welcome to the World of Integers! Grade 5 Mathematics

What Are Integers?
Integers are whole numbers They include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero No fractions or decimals - just whole numbers! Examples: -3, -1, 0, 2, 5

Understanding Zero
Zero is neither positive nor negative It's the starting point on our number line Zero means 'nothing' or 'empty' Examples: 0 cookies, 0 degrees, ground level

Positive Numbers
Numbers greater than zero We use them for counting up Usually written without a + sign Examples: 1, 2, 3, 10, 25, 100

Negative Numbers
Numbers less than zero Always written with a minus (-) sign Used for temperatures below freezing Examples: -1, -5, -10, -20

The Number Line

Number Line Adventure
Start at zero Move 3 steps to the right - where are you? Now move 5 steps to the left - where are you now? Can you get back to zero?

Real World Examples
{"left":"Temperature: 75°F (hot day)\nElevator: Floor 3 (above ground)\nMoney: $5 (you have money)\nGolf: 2 under par (good score)","right":"Temperature: -10°F (very cold)\nElevator: Basement level -2\nMoney: -$3 (you owe money)\nSea level: 200 feet below"}

Quick Check!
Which number is larger: -5 or -2? What number comes right before zero? If you're at -3 and move right 4 spaces, where do you land? Is zero positive or negative?

Remember These Key Points
Integers include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero Zero is neither positive nor negative The number line helps us see the order of integers Negative numbers always have a minus (-) sign We use integers in real life every day!
