Fun with Fractions: Grade 3
Understanding Parts and Wholes Comparing and Adding Fractions Making Math Fun and Visual

What Are Fractions?
A fraction has two parts: Numerator (top number) - how many parts we have Denominator (bottom number) - how many equal parts in the whole Example: In 3/4, we have 3 parts out of 4 equal parts
Fraction Detective Activity
Look around the classroom for fraction examples Find objects that can be divided into equal parts Share what fractions you discover Draw your favorite fraction example

Equivalent Fractions
Different fractions that show the same amount 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 Like having the same amount of pizza in different sized slices Use fraction bars to see they're equal

The Butterfly Method
A fun way to compare fractions! Step 1: Draw butterfly wings Step 2: Multiply across (cross multiply) Step 3: Compare the numbers to see which fraction is bigger

Adding and Subtracting Fractions
{"left":"When denominators are the same:\nAdd or subtract the numerators\nKeep the denominator the same","right":"2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5\n4/7 - 2/7 = 2/7\nThink of it like counting pieces of the same size"}

Challenge Time!
Can you convert this improper fraction to a mixed number? 9/4 = ? Hint: How many whole groups of 4 can you make?
