What is Addition?
Addition means putting numbers together We use the + sign The answer is called the sum
Count On Strategy
Start with the bigger number Count up from there Example: 5 + 3 = ? Start at 5, count: 6, 7, 8
Practice Count On
Try these problems: 4 + 2 = ? 6 + 3 = ? Remember: Start with the bigger number!
Doubles Strategy
Adding the same number twice Easy to remember! Examples: 2 + 2 = 4, 3 + 3 = 6, 4 + 4 = 8
Doubles Quiz
What is 5 + 5? What is 1 + 1? Can you think of more doubles?
Near Doubles Strategy
One number is almost a double Add the double, then add or subtract 1 Example: 4 + 5 Think: 4 + 4 = 8, then add 1 more = 9

Solve using near doubles: 3 + 4 = ? 6 + 7 = ? Hint: Find the double first!
Doubles Plus 1 Strategy
Similar to near doubles When one number is 1 more than the other Example: 7 + 8 Think: 7 + 7 = 14, plus 1 more = 15
