Addition Story Problem Challenge
Alice has 7 apples Bob has 5 apples How many apples do they have altogether? Turn and talk: How can we solve this?

Strategy 1: Counting On
Start with the bigger number Count up from there Example: 7 + 5 Start at 7, count: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

Strategy 2: Make Ten
Break apart numbers to make 10 first Example: 7 + 5 Think: 7 + 3 = 10 Then: 10 + 2 = 12

Strategy 3: Doubles and Near Doubles
Use doubles facts you already know Example: 6 + 7 Think: 6 + 6 = 12 So 6 + 7 = 12 + 1 = 13
