Grade 6 Special Education Resource Class Decoding and Writing Mastery Lesson 6 of 30

What Are R-Controlled Vowels?
When a vowel is followed by 'r', it changes the sound The 'r' controls or bosses the vowel We can't hear the regular vowel sound anymore Today we'll focus on: ar, er, ir

The 'ar' Sound
Makes the sound like in 'car' Examples: star, park, hard, farm The 'a' doesn't say its name Listen carefully to the new sound

The 'er' Sound
Makes the sound like in 'her' Examples: fern, term, verb, clerk The 'e' changes its sound completely Practice saying these words slowly

The 'ir' Sound
Makes the same sound as 'er' Examples: bird, girl, first, shirt The 'i' doesn't say its regular sound Notice it sounds just like the 'er' words
