The Orchard in the Fog A silver fog curled between the apple trees as Evie followed a trail of bright blue feathers. At the edge of the orchard, Bodhi stopped beside a crooked old shed. “Those feathers weren’t here yesterday,” he said. A faint tapping sound came from inside. Evie pushed the door open a little. It creaked, and a gust of cold air sent dust swirling around their shoes. Something fluttered in the dimness. A small cockatoo was caught behind a fallen wooden crate, beating its wings against the wall. Evie wanted to reach in straight away, but Bodhi noticed a loose nail sticking out of the crate. “Let’s move it from this side,” he said. Together, they slid a sturdy plank under the crate and lifted it just enough for the bird to squeeze free. The cockatoo hopped onto Evie’s arm, then flapped to the shed roof. The fog was beginning to lift. From the doorway, the children spotted a farmer coming along the path. They called out and told her what had happened. She smiled as the cockatoo flew towards the tall gum trees. On the walk back through the orchard, Evie looked at the fading feathers in her hand. Their unexpected adventure had ended safely, and the morning seemed brighter than before.
