Earthworms make tunnels that let air and water move through the soil. Soil can also help filter water as it passes through. Farmers and gardeners rely on healthy soil to grow many of the foods we eat. Protecting soil matters because it can take a very long time to form. People can help protect soil by avoiding pollution and litter, caring for plants and soil, and preventing soil from being washed away.
