📖 Reading Passage

Ruby Bridges: A Brave Young Pioneer

In 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges made history when she became the first African American child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South. On November 14, 1960, Ruby walked through the doors of William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana, escorted by federal marshals for her protection.

Ruby's journey to school was not easy. Angry crowds gathered outside the school every day, shouting and protesting. Many white parents removed their children from the school, and Ruby spent her entire first year in a classroom by herself with one teacher, Mrs. Henry. Despite the challenges, Ruby showed incredible courage and determination.

Ruby's bravery helped pave the way for school integration across the United States. Her actions during the Civil Rights Movement demonstrated that even young people could make a significant difference in fighting for equality and justice. Today, Ruby Bridges continues to work as an activist and speaks to children about the importance of tolerance and respect.

Success Criteria: I can read and understand a text about an important figure in Black history.
