Character Description Writing
A mysterious visitor has arrived at a small coastal museum just before closing. Use the clues and your imagination to build a vivid character. There is no single correct character: make your choices purposeful, then write so a reader can picture and understand them.
Build a character from clues
Choose details that suggest a story. You may invent a name, age, history and reason for visiting.
1.The visitor pauses at the doorway. Choose one striking detail a reader would notice first, and explain what it might make the reader suspect.
2.Which verb most clearly suggests the visitor is trying not to be noticed? Pick one and use it in a sentence about their movement.
- strode
- crept
- wandered
- marched
3.Rewrite “The visitor was nervous” without using the word nervous. Show the feeling through a physical action or detail.
4.Which combination of details best hints that the visitor has a secret without explaining it outright?
- A bright jacket, loud shoes and a cheerful wave
- A damp coat, a guarded glance and one hand closed around a small object
- A clean shirt, a broad smile and a museum brochure
- A tall hat, shiny buttons and a quick greeting
Shape the description
Use appearance, movement and small clues to reveal personality. Mix sentence lengths and choose specific nouns and verbs.
5.Complete this sentence with an original simile that fits your visitor: “Their eyes were like ___, because ___.”
6.Invent one clothing or appearance detail for the visitor. Explain how it hints at their personality, experience or current situation.
7.Write two sentences about the visitor: one short sentence for emphasis, then one longer sentence that adds a detail or explanation.
8.Write a description of the visitor in one developed paragraph (about 100–140 words). Include at least three precise physical details, a revealing action, and a hint of personality or mystery. Avoid simply listing features.
9.Choose one sentence from your paragraph. Improve it by replacing a general word with a more precise one, or by adding a detail that reveals character. Write the original and revised sentence.
10.Read your paragraph again. Name one detail that helps the reader infer the visitor’s personality, and explain the inference.
