The Circus Without Wild Animals

At the history museum, Kwame and Anya visited a display about travelling circuses. A faded poster showed wild animals leaping through hoops and standing on platforms. The caption explained that, in the past, some circuses took wild animals from town to town. The animals travelled in wagons and lived in enclosures between performances. “Those tricks might look exciting,” said Anya, “but I wonder what life was like for the animals.” Kwame read the next panel. It said that animal welfare campaigners raised concerns about whether wild animals could live well in small spaces and perform tricks. They argued that animals should live in suitable habitats, not be made to perform for an audience. Circuses have changed over time. Many shows now feature human performers, including acrobats, clowns and jugglers. Some include domestic animals, such as horses or dogs, while others have no animal acts at all. Rules about circus animals differ between countries, and people still discuss what kind treatment should mean. Before leaving, Kwame and Anya added a note to the museum’s visitor board: “A brilliant show can make people gasp without making an animal perform.” They agreed that audiences can enjoy circus skills while also thinking carefully about the welfare of animals.
