Comprehension: The Little Pig

Read the story carefully. You can look back at it whenever you need to. Answer the questions using clues from the story.

Pip and the windy day

Pip was the smallest of three piglets who lived on a grassy slope. One morning, dark clouds rolled in and the wind began to whistle through the grass. Pip hurried to finish his little house. He had made it from thin sticks, which were quick to gather but wobbled whenever he pushed them. His sister Mae called from her snug brick house. “Come inside, Pip. The wind is getting stronger!” Pip shook his head. “I can make my house stay up,” he said, and tied the sticks together with long strips of flax. A gust whooshed over the hill. Pip’s house leaned, creaked and fell in a heap. Pip was not hurt, but he felt worried. He dashed to Mae’s house, where his brother Tom was already waiting. Tom had built a small shelter from thick wooden boards, but he had chosen to join them with string. As the wind rattled the windows, one board came loose. Mae opened her door wide. The three piglets stayed safe and warm while the storm passed. The next day, Pip and Tom helped Mae mend a gate. Then they worked together to build a sturdy shed, using strong boards and proper nails. Pip smiled as he hammered the last one in. “Next time, I’ll ask for a hand before the wind arrives!”
