The Missing Sign

On Saturday morning, Charlie and her cousin Hamish arrived at the creek reserve to help prepare for the community clean-up. Charlie had made a bright sign showing where volunteers should meet. She had left it beside the garden shed the afternoon before. But the sign was gone. Dark clouds were gathering, and the first volunteers would arrive soon. Without the sign, people might not know where to go. Charlie felt annoyed with herself for leaving it outside. Hamish wanted to search the whole reserve, but Charlie thought they should make a new sign straight away. They hurried to the shed. The paper and markers were still there, but the cardboard backing was missing. Then Hamish spotted a corner of cardboard caught under the shed door. He pulled it free. The old sign had blown underneath during the night, and rain had blurred some of the writing. Charlie frowned. “We can’t use that. We’ll have to start again.” Hamish studied the sign. “The arrows are still clear. We could fix the words and put it somewhere sheltered.” Charlie was unsure. She had wanted the sign to look perfect. But she knew Hamish was right: the volunteers needed directions more than perfect lettering. Together, they rewrote the faded words and taped the sign to the noticeboard under the shelter. Just as they finished, the first volunteers arrived. One of them followed the arrows and smiled. “We found you!” Charlie smiled too. The sign was not perfect, but it had done its job. Charlie thanked Hamish for noticing what could be saved instead of giving up.
