Creative Writing Fundamentals

Read the craft notes and the short scene. Then analyse, revise and create. Use precise choices rather than adding detail for its own sake. There can be more than one effective creative response; model answers are examples, not the only possibilities.

Craft notes: purposeful storytelling

Character is revealed through choices, speech and behaviour. Setting can create mood and pressure, not merely provide a backdrop. Plot turns on change or consequence. Theme develops through patterns and tensions rather than a stated lesson. Imagery, rhythm and sentence variation should serve the scene.

At 6:17, the club’s old radio crackled once and went quiet. Levi looked up from the rescue-board rack. Beyond the windows, the last strip of daylight had turned the sea the colour of a bruise. “Probably the battery,” Ari said. He kept winding the loose strap around his wrist. Talia set down the mug she had been holding. “That wasn’t the battery.” The radio clicked again. A voice surfaced through the static—three clipped syllables, then nothing. Levi reached for the handset. Ari caught his sleeve. For a moment neither of them moved. Then Talia crossed the room and opened the door. Wind shoved in, bringing salt and the distant, uneven sound of a whistle.

Read like a writer

Use evidence from “A late signal” in your answers. Explain how the choices work on a reader; avoid simply naming a technique.

1.Which detail most clearly establishes that the scene may become dangerous? Select one and explain its effect: the mug, the darkening sea, the loose strap, or the radio’s clipped voice.
2.What might Ari’s repeated winding of the strap suggest about his state of mind? Support your interpretation with the detail.
3.Explain how the phrase “the colour of a bruise” shapes the mood. Why is it more suggestive than simply saying the sea was dark?
4.The scene ends with the sound of a whistle but does not explain it. What question does this ending leave in the reader’s mind, and how does that uncertainty create suspense?
5.Identify one contrast between the characters’ responses to the radio. What does that contrast suggest about their different attitudes?

Revise with intention

Make each revision change the reader’s experience. Keep the scene’s basic situation, but use your own wording.

6.Rewrite “The radio clicked again” to make the sound feel more unsettling. Use a specific verb or an image, and avoid adding more than one sentence.
7.Add one line of dialogue for Levi immediately after Talia opens the door. The line should reveal his character indirectly, through what he says or does not say.
8.The opening gives a precise time. Suggest a different opening sentence that begins with action or sound instead, while still drawing the reader into the scene.

Create and reflect

Write with a clear purpose. Plan briefly, then draft and edit for effect.

9.Continue “A late signal” in 150–200 words. Reveal what the whistle means, but do not resolve everything. Build suspense using setting, a character choice, and at least one deliberate sentence-length change.
10.Edit your continuation. Underline one sentence you shortened or lengthened for effect. In the margin or below, explain what that rhythm change makes the reader notice or feel.
