DAFOREST Persuasive Techniques

At a busy train station, a youth group is campaigning for a safer, more welcoming waiting area. Read the campaign extract, investigate how it persuades, then create a short piece of your own. DAFOREST stands for Direct address, Alliteration, Facts, Opinions, Rhetorical questions, Emotive language, Statistics and Triplets.

Read the campaign extract

The station is more than a place to catch a train: for many young people, it is where the journey home begins. Yet at peak times, the waiting area becomes crowded, poorly lit and difficult to navigate. Last month, our youth group counted 120 passengers waiting there between 4 pm and 5 pm on a Friday. That is a count from one hour, not a total for every day, but it shows how quickly the space fills. Should anyone have to choose between standing in a crush and waiting outside in the rain? You deserve somewhere safe, warm and well lit. A brighter waiting area, clearer signs and a staffed help point would make a real difference. This is not a luxury; it is a basic improvement. Support a station that welcomes, protects and respects every passenger. Ask the station team to publish a plan this month.

Spot the persuasive choices

For each question, use evidence from the extract where requested. Some sentences use more than one technique; explain your reasoning when prompted.

1.In “You deserve somewhere safe, warm and well lit”, which technique directly addresses the reader?
  • Alliteration
  • Direct address
  • Statistics
  • Rhetorical question
2.Find the phrase in the extract that uses alliteration. Copy it and identify the repeated initial sound.
3.Which detail is presented as a statistic, and what limitation does the writer openly acknowledge about it?
4.“This is not a luxury; it is a basic improvement.” Is this mainly a fact or an opinion? Explain why.
5.Copy the rhetorical question from the extract. What concern is it designed to make readers consider?
6.Identify two emotive words or phrases in the extract and explain the feeling each might create.
7.In “safe, warm and well lit”, identify the triplet. Why might a writer use three qualities rather than one?
8.Explain how the writer combines the statistic with the qualification about its limits. What effect might this have on a sceptical reader?
9.Write one persuasive sentence asking the station team to act. Include direct address and emotive language; label each technique in brackets.
10.Write a short campaign paragraph (4–6 sentences) arguing for a change to the station waiting area. Use at least four different DAFOREST techniques, label them in brackets, and make your statistics accurate or clearly hypothetical.
11.Choose one technique from your paragraph and explain how its wording may influence a particular audience, such as young passengers, station staff or local decision-makers.
