Electromagnets PEEL Writing

Read the fact file, solve the quick checks, then plan and write a PEEL paragraph about why electromagnets are useful. PEEL means Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link.

Fact file: power you can switch on and off

An electromagnet is made by winding insulated wire into a coil around an iron core, such as an iron nail. When electric current flows through the coil, it creates a magnetic field and the iron core becomes magnetic. When the current stops, the magnetism mostly disappears. More coils or a stronger current can make an electromagnet stronger. Electromagnets are useful in scrapyard cranes, which can lift iron and steel objects and release them by switching off the current. They are also used in doorbells and many electric motors. They do not attract every metal: aluminium and copper are not pulled towards an ordinary electromagnet.

Check the facts

Use the fact file to answer each question. Give complete answers where asked.

1.Which set of materials can make a simple electromagnet?
  • A battery, insulated wire and an iron core
  • A torch, string and a plastic ruler
  • A magnet, water and a wooden stick
  • A glass jar, paper and copper coins
2.What happens to the electromagnet when the electric current is switched off?
3.Which two objects in the fact file use electromagnets?
4.True or false? An ordinary electromagnet attracts aluminium in the same way it attracts iron.
TrueFalse
5.Fill in the blanks: Electric current flows through a wire wrapped around an iron to create a magnetic field.
6.Explain why a scrapyard crane can drop its load without pushing it off the magnet.

Build your PEEL paragraph

Your writing mission: Explain why electromagnets are useful. Use the fact file as evidence, and make sure your explanation shows how the evidence supports your point.

7.Point: Write one clear topic sentence that gives your main idea about why electromagnets are useful.
8.Evidence: Record two accurate facts or examples from the fact file that support your point.
9.Explanation: In your own words, explain how one piece of evidence proves that being able to control magnetism is useful.
10.Link: Write a concluding sentence that returns to your main point without simply copying your topic sentence.
11.Write a complete PEEL paragraph explaining why electromagnets are useful. Include a Point, at least one fact or example as Evidence, an Explanation and a Link. Try using linking words such as for example, because, therefore or as a result.
12.Self-check your paragraph: Have you included a clear Point, accurate Evidence, an Explanation connecting the evidence to your point, and a Link? Check that you used science words correctly and reread for full stops and capital letters.
