Exploring Imaginative Texts

Read the story carefully, then answer the questions using details from the text. For questions asking for your own ideas, answers may vary.

The Lantern in the Mangroves

On the edge of a quiet coastal town, a winding boardwalk crossed a forest of mangroves. At dusk, the trees seemed to stand on tiptoe above the water, their roots making dark, tangled patterns beneath the waves. Jarrah was carrying a small brass lantern to her grandfather’s shed when she heard a soft, three-note whistle. It came from the mangroves. She stopped. The lantern’s flame flickered, though there was no wind. A silver fish leapt from the water and landed on the boardwalk. Instead of flopping, it blinked at Jarrah and spoke. “The moon has lost its reflection,” it said. “Without it, our lagoon will forget how to shine.” Jarrah followed the fish along the boardwalk. At the lagoon, the water was as dark as ink. She held the lantern over the surface. Its golden light trembled, then stretched into a bright path across the water. At the end of the path, a round piece of moonlight shimmered between two roots. The fish nudged the moonlight with its nose. It floated upwards and slipped back into the sky. At once, silver ripples danced across the lagoon. The fish bowed. Jarrah smiled, but when she turned towards home, the lantern was empty. A tiny silver scale glowed inside it instead.

Look closely at the story

Use evidence from the story in your answers. When asked to explain, include a reason or a detail.

1.Which choice best describes an imaginative text?
  • A text that only gives instructions for completing a task
  • A text that uses invented characters or events to create a story
  • A text that lists facts about a real place
  • A text that reports the weather
2.Where does most of Jarrah’s adventure take place? Name two details that help you picture this setting.
3.What unusual thing does Jarrah hear, and what does she see when she stops?
4.What problem does the silver fish tell Jarrah about?
5.Put these events in the order they happen. Write 1, 2, 3 and 4 beside them: the moonlight floats into the sky; Jarrah follows the fish; the lantern makes a bright path; Jarrah hears a whistle.
6.In the sentence “the water was as dark as ink”, what does this comparison help you imagine?
7.Which word best describes Jarrah when she follows the fish into the mangroves? Choose one and explain your choice: curious, careless or grumpy.
8.True or false: The story is imaginative because it includes a talking fish and a piece of moonlight that can float back into the sky.
TrueFalse
9.At the end, what unexpected object is glowing inside Jarrah’s empty lantern? What might it suggest?
10.Imagine the silver fish meets Jarrah again the next evening. Write two or three sentences describing what happens next. Include a character, a setting and one imaginative event.
