Family Writing Activities

Plan and write a piece to share with your whānau. You can work with someone at home, or complete every activity on your own. Choose a real experience or make one up—there is no need to share private family information.

Choose your writing mission

Pick one mission and circle it. Each gives you a different kind of writing to create.

1.Which writing mission will you do? A) Recount: tell about a memorable day. B) Instructions: explain how to play a game or make a snack. C) Narrative: invent an adventure for a crew travelling through space. D) Persuasive letter: convince your whānau to try an activity together.

2.For your chosen mission, jot down ideas: Who is involved? What happens or needs to be done? Where and when does it happen? Why does it matter? How will it work? You may invent details.

3.A space crew is writing instructions for a game. Put these steps in the most sensible order by writing 1, 2 and 3: ___ Take turns to describe the hidden object. ___ Gather three safe objects and place them in a bag. ___ Guess the object without looking inside.

Build a strong opening

A good opening helps a reader want to continue.

4.Choose the strongest opening for a recount about a surprise trip, then explain one reason. A) We went somewhere. B) The wind tugged at our jackets as we stepped off the ferry, ready to explore. C) Trips are things people do.

5.Improve this opening by adding a precise detail or an interesting clue: “We started our space adventure.” Write your improved sentence.

6.Write the first two or three sentences for the mission you chose. Include a clear opening and at least one detail that helps the reader picture or understand it.

Read each sentence carefully. Fix capital letters, punctuation and word choices.

10.Use this checklist to review your opening: Does it start with a capital letter? Does it make sense? Does it stay on topic? Does each sentence end with suitable punctuation? Write one change you made or would make.

11.What would you like your reader to feel, learn or do after reading your piece? Write one sentence explaining your goal.
