Mission: Build a Paper Bridge

A pair of paper bridges will be tested in the school library’s design challenge. Your task is to make a bridge from one sheet of paper and see how much it can support. Work on a clear, flat surface. Keep coins away from the edge of the table.

Materials: one sheet of A4 paper, two identical books, and up to ten 1p coins. 1. Place the books on the flat surface, with their covers facing upwards. Leave a gap of about 10 cm between them. 2. Lay the paper flat across the gap so that each short end rests on a book. This is your first bridge design. 3. Put one coin in the middle of the paper. If the paper stays in place, add coins one at a time, keeping each coin in the centre. Stop when the paper bends too far or touches the surface beneath it. Record the number of coins it held. 4. Remove the coins. Take the paper off the books and fold it lengthways into a concertina, making four equal ridges. Do not tear the paper. 5. Return the folded paper to the books, with the ridges running from one book to the other. Check that both ends still rest on the books. 6. Repeat the coin test, placing the coins one at a time in the centre. Stop at the first sign that the bridge is slipping or collapsing. Record the number held. 7. Compare the two results. Put the coins away and recycle the paper when you have finished. Safety note: Add coins gently. Do not lean over the bridge or use anything heavier than the coins supplied.
