Glenelg River Geography Introduction
A river across western Victoria
The Glenelg River rises in the Grampians (Gariwerd) in western Victoria and flows towards the coast. It crosses a varied landscape before reaching the coast near Nelson, where it enters Discovery Bay. Parts of its lower course wind through limestone country, creating bends and steep-sided sections called gorges. The river and its estuary provide habitat for plants and animals, and the waterway is valued for recreation and by communities along its course. Rivers change landscapes through erosion, transport and deposition. Erosion wears away rock and soil; transport carries sediment downstream; deposition happens when the river drops that sediment. The amount and speed of water, the rock type and the shape of the land all influence how a river changes over time.
