Grammar Focus Series

At a stargazing night in Aotearoa New Zealand, Mere, Mele and Oliver are preparing a short report for their group. Use the sentences and clues on this sheet to practise clauses, sentence structure and punctuation. Read each task carefully; where a question asks you to write, one possible answer is provided for checking.

Build clear sentences

A complete sentence needs an independent clause: a group of words that expresses a complete thought.

1.Which line is a complete sentence? Choose one. A) After the clouds moved away. B) The Southern Cross appeared above the horizon. C) Watching through the telescope.
  • A) After the clouds moved away.

2.In the sentence “Mele carefully adjusted the telescope”, identify the subject and the verb.
3.Oliver wrote, “The sky grew darker, and the first stars appeared.” Is this sentence simple, compound or complex? Explain briefly.

Connect ideas

Coordinating conjunctions such as and, but, and so can join ideas. A dependent clause needs an independent clause to complete its meaning.

4.Choose the best conjunction: “Mere wanted to sketch the stars, _____ she could not find her pencil.”
  • and
  • but
  • so
5.Combine these ideas into one compound sentence using “so”: The wind became stronger. The group packed away the telescope.
6.Add the missing comma to make this sentence correctly punctuated: “Although the night was chilly the group stayed outside to watch the sky.”
7.Match each sentence beginning (1–3) with the clause ending (A–C) that completes it meaningfully. 1. We used a red torch | 2. Mele smiled | 3. The stars were easier to see | A. because it did not spoil our night vision | B. when Oliver found the constellation | C. after the clouds cleared

8.Complete the sentence with a subordinating conjunction that shows a reason: “ the clouds had cleared, Oliver could see Jupiter.”

Edit the report

Read each sentence closely. Check sentence type, punctuation and clarity.

9.Classify this sentence as simple, compound or complex: “When the moon rose, the group packed up their equipment.”
  • Simple
  • Compound
  • Complex
10.Rewrite this line with correct capitalisation and punctuation: “look over there mere shouted can you see saturn”
