Hamilton Island Environmental Features

Read the information, then help Anh and Zach prepare an environmental guide to Hamilton Island. Use evidence from the notes to answer. For questions that ask what you think, explain your reasoning.

A small island with many habitats

Hamilton Island is in Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands, off the coast of north-eastern Australia. It has warm, often humid weather and a mix of environmental features. The island’s hills have native trees, shrubs and grasses. Rocky shores and sandy beaches meet the sea, while mangroves grow in sheltered coastal places nearby. Coral reefs lie in the surrounding waters of the Great Barrier Reef region. These places are habitats: environments where living things find what they need. Plants are called flora; animals are called fauna. Birds may feed or nest near the coast, and fish and other sea animals use reef habitats for food and shelter. Living things depend on each other and on non-living features such as sunlight, water, rocks and soil. Together, these form an ecosystem. People can help care for island and reef environments by taking rubbish away, staying on marked paths, and observing wildlife without touching or feeding it. Reefs can be harmed by pollution, careless contact and other pressures. Looking after habitats helps protect the plants and animals that depend on them.

  • It stops all changes in the weather.
  • It is a place where native grasses grow.
6.Complete the chain to show one way living things can depend on a habitat: A reef provides __________ for a fish, helping it to live.
7.Imagine rubbish is left on a beach and washes into the sea. Describe one possible effect on the island or reef environment.
8.Anh and Zach are making a visitor tip. Which action best helps protect wildlife? Explain why it is helpful.
9.Draw and label a simple Hamilton Island coastal habitat. Include at least one living thing and one non-living feature from the notes.
Label your living and non-living features.
