Identity Narrative Planning Template

Create an original character and plan a story that reveals what matters to them. Use the prompts to develop a beginning, a turning point and an ending. There are no single correct responses; give specific ideas you can build into your story.

Build your character

1.Invent a main character. What are their name, age and one detail about where or how they grew up?
2.Choose three influences that help shape your character. Tick three, then add a brief note about each: family or community; culture or heritage; a skill or interest; a significant experience; a hope or ambition; a difficulty they are navigating.
3.Describe two personality qualities your character shows. What do they value most, and how can a reader tell?
4.Choose a place and time for the story. Why might this setting matter to your character?

Shape the story

5.Beginning: What is happening when the reader first meets your character? Include one detail that hints at an important part of their identity.
6.Middle: What event, decision or disagreement puts pressure on your character? Explain how it connects to something they value or believe.
7.Ending: What choice or action resolves the main problem? What does your character understand about themselves afterwards?

Make identity visible to the reader

8.Select two ways your narrative will reveal identity. For each, jot down a moment you could include: actions or choices; private thoughts; conversations or relationships; customs or shared practices; responses to a challenge.
9.What idea about identity would you like readers to consider? Write it as a message your story could suggest, rather than a lecture.
10.List four vivid words or short phrases to describe your character. Include at least one detail about how they speak, move or respond to others.
