📖 Reading Passage: The Amazing Kiwi Bird

New Zealand is home to one of the world's most unique birds - the kiwi. These fascinating creatures are about the size of a chicken but cannot fly. Kiwis have long, curved beaks that help them find insects and worms in the soil. Unlike most birds, kiwis are nocturnal, which means they are active at night and sleep during the day.

The kiwi's feathers look more like hair than traditional bird feathers. They have very small wings hidden under their feathers, but these wings are too small for flight. Kiwis have excellent senses of smell and hearing to help them navigate in the dark. A female kiwi lays one or two very large eggs - in fact, kiwi eggs are the largest in proportion to body size of any bird in the world!

There are five different species of kiwi, and all of them live only in New Zealand. Sadly, kiwis are endangered because of habitat loss and introduced predators like cats, dogs, and stoats. Conservation groups work hard to protect these special birds. Many kiwi sanctuaries have been established throughout New Zealand to help increase their numbers.

The kiwi is so important to New Zealand that it has become the country's national bird. New Zealanders are often called "Kiwis" because of their connection to this remarkable bird. Today, there are approximately 68,000 kiwis left in the wild, and scientists continue working to ensure their survival for future generations.
