Moon Phases and Tides

At an airport near the coast, Levi and Anahera are waiting for a flight after a day by the harbour. Use the information and visuals on this sheet to solve their Moon-and-tide questions. Answer in your own words where asked.

A changing view of the Moon

The Moon does not make its own light; sunlight illuminates half of it at a time. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see different amounts of that sunlit half. The familiar sequence takes about 29.5 days: new Moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, waning gibbous, third quarter (also called last quarter), waning crescent, then new Moon again. Waxing means the visible lit part is growing; waning means it is shrinking.

1.Levi sees the Moon’s visible lit part growing each evening. Which word describes this: waxing or waning? Explain what is changing.
2.Put these phases in order, starting just after new Moon: full Moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous.
3.At which phase do people on Earth see the largest fully lit-looking face of the Moon?
  • New Moon
  • First quarter
  • Full Moon
  • Third quarter
4.Anahera says, “The Moon changes shape during the month.” Improve her explanation by describing what actually changes and what causes us to see it.

Tides at the harbour

The Moon’s gravity helps create tides. It pulls ocean water into a bulge on the side of Earth nearest the Moon; a second bulge forms on the opposite side. As Earth rotates through these bulges, many coastlines experience two high tides and two low tides in about a lunar day (roughly 24 hours 50 minutes). The Sun’s gravity also affects tides. When the Sun, Earth and Moon line up at new Moon or full Moon, their effects combine to make larger tidal ranges: spring tides. At first and third quarter, the Sun and Moon pull in different directions, making smaller tidal ranges: neap tides. Spring tides happen throughout the year, not only in spring.

5.Which pair of phases is linked to spring tides, when the tidal range is usually larger?
  • New Moon and full Moon
  • First quarter and third quarter
  • Waxing crescent and waning crescent
  • Waxing gibbous and waning gibbous
6.Match each Moon phase to its usual tide pattern.
  • New Moon
  • First quarter
  • Full Moon
  • Third quarter
  • Neap tide
  • Spring tide
  • Spring tide
  • Neap tide
7.Select the statement that is NOT correct about tides.
  • The Moon’s gravity helps pull on Earth’s oceans.
  • There are ocean bulges on both the near and far sides of Earth.
  • Neap tides are linked to first-quarter and third-quarter Moons.
  • Spring tides occur only during the spring season.
  • The Sun also affects tides.
8.A beach notice says the tidal range will be small today. Which tide is likely, and which Moon phases are commonly associated with it?
9.Why might someone planning a coastal walk or boat trip in Aotearoa check local tide times before setting out?
10.Complete the summary: Moon phases happen because we see different amounts of the Moon’s half.
11.Complete the summary: The Moon’s gravity and the Sun’s gravity both affect Earth’s .
12.Complete the summary: At new and full Moon, the tidal range is usually (larger or smaller).
