The Recipe Behind the Shelf

During a school cooking class, Zach and Oliver were sent to the old library next door to find a recipe book. Their teacher wanted a dish that could be prepared without an oven. The librarian pointed them towards a shelf of cookbooks that had not been borrowed in years. As Zach searched, a thin book slipped forward. Its spine was faded, but a strip of bright blue paper poked out from behind it. Oliver noticed that the books beside it were neatly lined up, while this one sat at an odd angle. When he eased it out, something tapped against the shelf. A small brass key fell onto the carpet. The book opened at a page marked with a handwritten note: “For the next cook who asks why this cupboard stays locked.” At the bottom was a date from forty years earlier and the initials “L.B.” From the corridor came the sound of a door closing. Zach looked towards the library entrance. Oliver turned the key over in his hand and spotted a tiny label tied to it. They had not yet read what the label said.
