Omar had promised to finish the job, but he was nowhere to be seen. A gust of wind lifted the fundraiser sign and sent it skidding towards the road. “Leave the car,” Isla called. “Get the sign!” Talia hesitated. The ute’s engine growled. Then the driver leaned out and caught the sign with one hand. For a second, nobody moved. He looked at the words COMMUNITY HALL and quietly switched off the engine. “I can wait,” he said. “Let’s save that first.”
