The Garden Behind the Gate

On Saturday morning, Maia helped her koro tidy the shed. Behind a stack of empty pots, she spotted a small brass key. A tag tied to it read: GARDEN GATE. Koro smiled. “I wondered where that had gone,” he said. He led Maia to an ivy-covered gate at the back of the section. The key turned with a click. Koro opened the gate. Beyond it, a narrow path wound through weeds to a garden crowded with tangled vines and dry leaves. Maia felt gloomy. She had imagined a bright, colourful place. Then she noticed a tui perched on a fence post. It dipped its beak into a red flower. A lemon tree stood nearby, heavy with fruit. “Perhaps this garden is waiting for us,” Maia said. Koro found a pair of gloves and a watering can. Together they pulled weeds, cleared the path and watered the thirsty plants. Maia worked until her arms felt tired, but she kept going. By lunchtime, sunlight reached a bed of tiny seedlings. Koro handed Maia a small wooden sign. She painted the words “Tui Garden” on it. As they hung the sign on the gate, Maia heard the tui call from the lemon tree. She grinned. The garden was not finished, but it was a wonderful beginning.
