Use rational numbers to solve problems from a bush regeneration day. Show working for calculations and include units where appropriate. Simplify fractions and ratios where possible.

A. Ratios in the field

Anh, Bodhi and Xavier are preparing native seedlings for a local bush regeneration day.

1.A tray holds 24 seedlings: 15 wattle and the rest paperbark. Write the ratio of wattle to paperbark in simplest form.

2.The team mixes mulch and compost in the ratio 3:2. If they use 18 buckets of mulch, how many buckets of compost are needed?

3.A water tank is 3/4 full and contains 180 L. What is its full capacity?

4.Two teams planted seedlings. Team A planted 18 seedlings in 3 hours. Team B planted 25 seedlings in 5 hours. Which team planted more seedlings per hour, and by how many per hour?

B. Rational numbers on the day

Use fractions, decimals and percentages to make sense of the team’s supplies and progress.

5.The team uses 2/5 of its 30 L supply of plant-safe solution. How many litres are used, and how many litres remain?

6.The target is 80 seedlings. By lunchtime the team has planted 60. What percentage of the target is complete?

7.Which is greater: 0.65 or 2/3? Show a comparison that supports your answer.

8.A seed-raising mix uses 4 parts soil to 1 part sand. How many litres of sand are needed to make 25 L of mix altogether?

9.The team has 36 native seedlings and wants to divide them between two planting areas in the ratio 5:4. How many seedlings should go to each area? Explain how you know your numbers are fair.

10.Xavier says that increasing both parts of the ratio 2:3 by 2 gives an equivalent ratio of 4:5. Is he correct? State the correct equivalent ratio and explain the mistake.
