Reading Comprehension and Inference

Read the story carefully. Then answer each question using details from the story and your own inferences where asked.

The Footbridge

Rain rattled against the windows as Maia packed her lunch for the school clean-up at Kauri Glen. By the time her group reached the reserve, the clouds had lifted, but water still ran quickly through the stream. Their job was to collect litter from the path and check that the little footbridge was safe to cross. “Stay on the track,” called Mr Rangi. “The banks are slippery.” Maia noticed a red scarf caught on a branch near the water. She recognised it as the one her younger brother, Theo, had worn that morning. He had been excited about the clean-up, but he was nowhere in sight. Maia looked back towards the picnic area. The rest of the group was moving on, and she knew she should tell an adult before leaving the track. She hurried to Mr Rangi and explained what she had seen. He asked the others to wait while he checked the picnic area with Maia. They found Theo there, crouched beside a rubbish bag. He had dropped the scarf while helping pick up litter and had gone back to look for it. When they returned, Mr Rangi thanked Maia for speaking up. The group checked the bridge together. One of its boards had shifted, so they put a bright safety cone beside it and reported the problem to the reserve staff. On the way back, Theo carried the red scarf—and Maia carried the rubbish bag.
