Rectangle Perimeter Measurement

A rectangular garden beside a local community centre needs edging. Use perimeter to work out how much edging is needed. Show calculations and include units in every measurement.

Know what you are measuring

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside boundary of a shape. For a rectangle, opposite sides are equal, so P = 2 × (length + width).

1.The garden plot is 9 m long and 4 m wide. Which expression gives its perimeter?
  • 9 × 4
  • 9 + 4
  • 2 × (9 + 4)
  • 4 × 9
2.Calculate the perimeter of the 9 m by 4 m garden plot. Include the correct unit.
3.The garden committee has 30 m of edging. The plot is 9 m long. What width can the plot be if all the edging is used? Show how you know.

Choose units carefully

Measurements can be converted before calculating, or each side can be converted to the same unit first. Remember: 1 m = 100 cm.

4.A rectangular seedling tray is 85 cm long and 0.6 m wide. Find its perimeter in centimetres. Show the conversion and calculation.
5.A rectangular path is 12.5 m long and 7 m wide. How many metres of border are needed to go all the way around it?
6.A student says, “A rectangle that is 8 m by 3 m has a perimeter of 24 m because 8 × 3 = 24.” Is the student correct? Explain the mistake and give the correct perimeter.

A design challenge

The committee wants a rectangular herb bed with a perimeter of exactly 20 m. Its side lengths must be whole metres.

7.Give two different possible pairs of whole-number length and width for a rectangle with perimeter 20 m. Check each pair by calculating its perimeter.
8.Could a rectangle with whole-number side lengths of 5 m and 5 m have a perimeter of 20 m? Explain what shape it is and verify its perimeter.
9.The garden is 10 m by 6 m. A 2 m-wide gate leaves one gap in the edging. How many metres of edging are needed, excluding the gate opening?
10.Write one real situation where calculating the perimeter of a rectangle would be useful. State what would go around the boundary and what measurements you would need.
