📖 Historical Narrative

Rome's transformation from Republic to Empire marked one of history's most significant political changes. The Roman Republic (509-27 BCE) began when Romans overthrew their last king and established a government where power was shared among elected officials called senators and consuls. Citizens could vote, and no single person held absolute control. The Republic expanded through military conquests, but internal conflicts and civil wars weakened the system. Other problems such as the spread of slavery into the agricultural system, the migration of small farmers into cities because of unemployment, and the devaluation Roman currency which led to inflation also led to the decline of the Roman Republic by 27 BCE.

Everything changed when Julius Caesar's adopted son, Augustus, became Rome's first emperor in 27 BCE. The Roman Empire (27 BCE-476 CE in the West) concentrated power in the hands of one ruler. While the Senate still existed, the emperor made all major decisions. This new system brought stability and prosperity but ended the democratic participation that characterized the Republic. The Empire grew to control most of the known world, from Britain to the Middle East, lasting for centuries under imperial rule.
