Sharing Our Origins

Read the crew’s story, then try the activities. You may share something about your own origins, or write a made-up example instead. Listen respectfully: every family’s story is different.

The crew’s story

Before their space mission, Omar, Oliver and Mei met to share stories about their families. Omar said, “My grandparents grew up in Lebanon. We speak Arabic and English at home, and my family makes a special meal together for celebrations.” Oliver said, “My family has lived in Australia for a long time. We speak English, and I enjoy hearing my nanna’s stories about when she was young.” Mei said, “My parents grew up in China. They speak Mandarin and English. At New Year, we call relatives and share a meal.” The crew noticed that their stories were different, but each person valued time with family. They asked kind questions and let each other choose what to share.

5.Which question would best help you learn about a person’s family story?
  • What would you like to tell me about your family?
  • Why is your family different?
  • Do you have the same story as everyone else?
6.Name one thing that was different between two crew members’ stories.
7.Name one thing the crew members had in common.
8.Imagine you are joining the space crew. Write one detail you could choose to share about yourself, a family member, or a made-up character. You could write about a place, language, food, story or celebration.
9.Write a respectful follow-up question you could ask a crew member after they share a story.
10.The crew discovered that their stories were different, but each person valued family time. In 2–3 sentences, explain why listening to different stories can help a team.
Draw a simple symbol for a story, place, language or tradition you choose to share. It can be real or imagined. Add a label if you like.
