Suzanne Aubert Explanation Writing

Read and gather information

Read the passage. Then use its information to prepare an explanation about Suzanne Aubert’s significance in New Zealand history.
Suzanne Aubert was born in France in 1835. She arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1860 and became known to many people as Mother Aubert. She devoted much of her life to caring for people who were sick, poor or in need of support. Aubert worked alongside Māori communities and showed respect for Māori knowledge and culture. She also made remedies using native plants. In 1892, she established the Sisters of Compassion, a religious community whose members served people in need. Her work included setting up a hospital in Wellington. Aubert’s contribution was not limited to one place or group of people. Through practical care and years of service, she helped build organisations that continued their work after her lifetime. In 2016, the Catholic Church recognised her life of service by declaring her Venerable. Her story is significant because it shows how one person’s commitment to caring for others could have a lasting effect in New Zealand.
