Tally's Blood Analysis Worksheet

Read the original practice scene below, then answer the questions using evidence from the scene. This is a self-contained practice text, not an extract from Ann Fairbairn’s play.

Original practice scene: The name on the form

Glasgow, 1952. A family is filling in a form at the kitchen table. The form asks for a place of birth and a nationality. MAMMA: It says, ‘Place of birth’. Put Naples. TALLY: I was born in Glasgow. MAMMA: Your father was born in Naples. His father before him. That matters. TALLY: It matters to you. At school, they call me Italian when they want a joke. At the football, they call me Italian when they want a fight. I’m tired of being handed a country like a coat that doesn’t fit. MAMMA: And Glasgow fits? TALLY: I know its streets. I know which bus gets me to work. I know the rain before it starts. MAMMA: You speak as if knowing a place makes it yours. TALLY: Doesn’t it? Mamma takes the form from him. She runs one finger along the blank line marked ‘Nationality’ but does not write. MAMMA: When we came here, people heard my accent and decided what I was before I had spoken. TALLY: I know. MAMMA: Do you? You want to rub away the part of you that sounds like me. TALLY: I want them to stop deciding for me. A clock ticks. Mamma folds the form once, carefully, as if it were a letter she had been waiting years to receive. MAMMA: Then write your own answer. Tally picks up the pen. He pauses above the line. TALLY: What if there isn’t a box for it? MAMMA: Then the form is too small.
